Bibendum Winebar Typography

Old wine in new bottles - New typography and logotype for this popular and atmospheric Winebar.

The curves and shape of the ornaments found in the metal sign outside the winebar and the name "Bibendum" (from the  latin frase: "Nunc est Bibendum", meaning let us drink) was used as inspiration.

It made me think of an old monestary filled with autentic wine barrels and cheary monks with red noses, laughing, eating and telling silly stories in the candlelit underground halls. In other words, a really cosy place to be.

This inspiration also made it very easy to decide that the typeface had to be with a clear reference to history, in contrast to something new, young and fancy. I decided to create a gothic inspired typeface, which could be found in a monestary or a latin illuminated manuscript. The capital B also made a very nice foundation used as the winebar logo to put on menus, business cards, windows etc.
